Yourself against Identity Theft
The follwing is a list of general principles you must follow
to protect yourself from Identity theft:
- Shred all documents with your personal details (SSN,
credit card numbers etc.) before you throw them out.
- Use a secure locked mail box
- Never provide your SSN without making sure that the
organization takes special care in keeping all your data
to itself.
- If you have to provide your SSN oraly make sure that
no third party is around who may be listening.
- Never print your SSN or driving ID number on your checks.
- Order a copy of your credit reports at frequent intervals.
- Make sure that all your outgoing mail - especially if
they carry sensitive private information - is not left
unattended.
- Make sure your driving license does not have your SSN
written on it (Ask the DMV to change it ASAP if it does).
- Don't carry your Social Security card in your wallet.
- Do not leave any personal information on your PC if
third parties have access to it.
- Pay careful and extensive care in removing all information
that may exist in the PCs you use.
- Remove in an unrecoverable way ('shred') electronic
documents that you want to remove.
- Delete the history and cache of your internet browser.
- Do not provide your personal details through emails
or in non-secure (non SSL) websites.

- Clean previously deleted e-mail messages that are lingering
in your e-mail archives.
- Find and erase old and current Internet cache, cookies,
and history data permanently.
- Scan for hidden Internet history files not seen by Windows.
- Safely reclaim wasted disk space, because all "deleted"

and useless space.
